The AmeriCorps Education Award is a recognition given to members who serve in participating programs through AmeriCorps. This award is an index of articles about notable awards in the field of education, which are awarded to teachers and educational institutions, rather than prizes given to students. Established by former University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health student James L. Craig, MD (EOH '6), the Craig Award recognizes faculty who have excelled in teaching and mentoring students.
The winners of the Craig Awards are nominated annually by Pitt Public Health students and selected by a committee of Pitt Public Health students and previous Craig winners. Innovation in Education Awards are funded by the award and applications for educational innovation awards and support materials can be submitted through Competition Space. All payments made with the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award are subject to federal taxes in the year in which each payment is made. Upon successful completion of their service, members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award from the National Service Trust.
This award can be used for seven years from the date of completion of service. Each period of service for which an individual earns an education award counts as a period of service when calculating term limitations. There are limitations on the number of terms a person can serve in each AmeriCorps program and on the maximum value of educational awards a person can receive. The amount of a full-time Segal AmeriCorps education award is equivalent to the maximum value of the Pell Grant for the fiscal year in which the national service period is approved.
While a person can serve more than two terms, they cannot earn more than the added value of two full-time education awards. If the Trust makes a payment on qualified student loans to an educational institution or lender for the full amount of a full-time education grant in a calendar year, the member is responsible for income taxes due in that calendar year on the full amount. Mark Gelfand Educational Outreach Service Award (nominated by Theresa Richards, Patricia Rote, Thomas Pope, Joseph Jackson and Chuck Whittaker) is one example of an award given out. The total amount of interest payments and the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award are listed together on Form 1099. Grubs has provided genetic education to primary care physicians in rural counties in Pennsylvania, giving lectures on the role of genetics in health care and participating in the development of educational CD-ROMs.
Walker has twice won the Department of Chemical Engineering's Kun Li Award for Excellence in Education, a rare achievement. The MAI is not responsible for awarding an education award to a member if they do not qualify according to the AmeriCorps guidelines of the National and Community Services Corporation.
